4-H CAPITAL - AmeriCorps Afterschool Instructor (Full Time)

About Us

4-H CAPITAL is a Travis County AgriLife Extension Program. Our 4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps Members plan and lead hands-on science activities for elementary and middle school students throughout Austin, TX. Members teach out-of-school time classes, in-school enrichment activities, and assist school staff with groups of students at local schools. Members also participate in community outreach activities, attend trainings, and may provide disaster relief work. Members receive training and support in a variety of areas to meet the essential functions of their position.

Job Details:

Our AmeriCorps Afterschool Instructors lead our afterschool clubs. During an AmeriCorps term with us, you'll grow your skills in working with youth, with animals, and your team. You'll serve the community and explore further professional development opportunities. As part of the Urban Farm science team, you will help raise goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and gardens at your assigned school. In the mornings, you'll learn through trainings, hands-on experience, and planning lessons. In the afternoon, you will transfer those skills to guiding your students through animal care and showmanship required for raising Boer goats for show at the Travis County Youth Show.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Inspire youth to develop into inquiring scientists, citizens of character, partners in service and engaged community members
• Be a positive role model and influence for elementary and middle school aged students
• Plan, lead, and assist 4-H CAPITAL’s science curriculum in the after-school space
• Develop proficiency in teaching and leading groups of youth of up to 16 students
• Implement proactive behavior management systems to ensure a safe and impactful teaching environment
• Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with working with livestock
• Responsible for daily care and health of large and small livestock animals
• Position is not remote—work will be fully in person.
• Has reliable transportation with the ability to travel to multiple school sites
• Members will work Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM (40-42 hours per week) with regular weekend events
• Keep attendance records of 4-H CAPITAL classes
• Assist in gathering and reporting data for evaluation purposes
• Willingness to work in an office environment that houses animals
• Wear AmeriCorps logo while serving hours

Qualifications and Skills:

• Interest in science, community service, youth development and/or non-profit work
• Experience working with youth in a professional setting
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn new things
• Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence
• Ability to bend, sit on floor, stoop and lift teaching materials that may weigh up to 50 lbs.
• Bilingual with English and Spanish (preferred)
• Participation in disaster relief during National Disasters

Compensation and Benefits:

• Earn a monthly living stipend of $3,238.10
• $7,395.00 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of term of service.
