Katie McNamara, ACE Austin ISD

“Being able to provide students with opportunities to explore new activities like jiu-jitsu, dance, art, or music and watching them discover new talents and passions has been deeply fulfilling.”

Katie McNamara works at ACE Austin ISD as Site Coordinator and Program Specialist, delivering engaging OST programming for students. Her goal is for afterschool programs to embrace student individuality, meeting each student where they are. “Every student is unique, and taking the time to understand who they are, their individual needs and strengths allows us to provide the right support.”

Katie considers building confidence in her students to be a vital component of  good afterschool programming. “Building strong, trusting relationships with students is key to creating an environment where they feel safe, valued, and motivated to grow.” She gives an example of a student who started the program disengaged and struggling to build social connections. Katie focused on making the program fun and welcoming for her, building a personal rapport with the student that helped her connect with her schoolwork, hobbies, and peers. “Years later, this student is now actively engaged in the program, thriving in school and has built several meaningful connections.”

In her work at ACE Austin ISD, Katie has implemented educational opportunities beyond conventional classroom instruction. “Being able to provide students with opportunities to explore new activities like jiu-jitsu, dance, art, or music and watching them discover new talents and passions has been deeply fulfilling.” In addition to delivering exciting new experiences, she has found those opportunities improve student confidence and social skills.

Katie brings a comprehensive, student-centered perspective to afterschool work. She has found a broad multidisciplinary approach helps students grow in life as well as the classroom. “My advice to organizations and individuals passionate about supporting young people is to focus on supporting the whole child—academically, physically, socially and emotionally.”

In the future, Katie hopes to continue to build on her strengths of providing a safe, supportive space for all students. “I aspire to adapt afterschool programs to meet the unique needs and interests of each student, ensuring they feel seen and valued. Above all, I hope that every one of my students leaves my program with increased confidence—whether it's in their academics, social interactions, or emotional well-being.”
